The Medal of the Jacob Theodor Klein Faculty of Biology for our Zoo Director
On November 16th, 2018 at the University of Gdańsk Library, a ceremony was held to award the Jacob Theodor Klein Faculty of Biology Medal. This prestigious award was granted to Michał Targowski, the Director of the Gdańsk Zoo and a graduate of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Gdańsk. This is the third award of this kind in the history of the University of Gdańsk granted to prominent biologists.
“I feel extremely privileged and honoured to join the group of people who have already been awarded the Jacob Theodor Klein Medal. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for this award to the Faculty of Biology of the University of Gdańsk,” stated Michał Targowski, the Director of the Gdańsk Zoological Garden.

The medal award ceremony was part of a ceremonial scientific session organised by the Faculty of Biology at the University of Gdańsk and Kapituła Kulinarna Gdańskie Smaki (the Tastes of Gdańsk Culinary Chapter), supported by the Gdańsk Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Main Library of the Gdańsk University of Technology and others. The ceremony was held to celebrate the anniversary of the establishment of the botanical garden in Gdańsk, on Długie Ogrody St. by Jacob Theodor Klein and his growing of a coffee shrub, probably for the first time in Europe.
The scientific meeting dedicated to the activities of Klein, a Gdańsk citizen of merit for European and world science, was first all an occasion to expand our knowledge on the history of coffee.
During the scientific sessions Klein’s achievements were mentioned - apart from his accomplishments in the field of botany, he was also renowned for his research in zoology. He was considered one of the most prominent taxonomists before Linnaeus and developed his own system of species classification. He was a member of scientific societies in London, Bologna and St. Petersburg,
as well as a co-founder of the Research Society in Gdańsk.
