Southern Ground Hornbill

The Southern ground hornbill is the largest species of Bucerotidae. This inhabitant of the African savannah rests and sleeps on trees but finds its food on the ground. Hornbills are great singers. At sunrise the Oliwa zoo is filled with the sound of their song, which can be heard up to 4 kilometers. The concert begins with the song of the male, after which his part is repeated by the female.

Did you know that… feathers around bird’s eyes have the same purpose as eyelashes of mammals – they protect from dust and sun.
