Scimitar-horned Oryx These animals originate from the semi-deserts of Africa and are one of the most valuable animals of many
zoos. They perfectly adapt to desert conditions thanks to their highly specialized kidney functions, allowing them to survive very long periods of drought. Unfortunately the animal is far less resistant to the human activity that has caused real disaster to their numbers. Besides being hunted for their hides, meat and horns they have also had to endure frequent wars in their regions.
According to the Red Book of the IUCN, they do not exist in their natural habitat any more. Currently, the scimitar-horned oryx is included in the programme EEP and we have been proud of the frequent births of this species in our zoo.
