DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
Europe: Greece, Albania; introduced in Sardinia and Crete. He lives in dry and sunny, shrub-covered slopes of the hills, groves olive trees, small agricultural areas. Most often it occurs below 800 m above sea level.
Active during the day, especially in the morning and early evening. He stays on hot days in the shade. Life expectancy: average 21 years. It is the largest terrestrial turtle in Europe. It can reach 35 cm in length and weigh up to 6 kg.
Grasses, herbs, shoots of shrubs. The digestive tract is well adapted to digesting high-fiber, low-protein plants.
Sexual maturity is reached at the age of 8 to 14 years. The mating takes place in March after waking up from hibernation. The female lays 4 to 7 eggs in the burrows dug under the bushes, sometimes three times a season.
