DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

Africa, Europe, Asia. Vast lakes, river deltas, sometimes sea coasts.

BEHAVIOUR

Migratory bird, lives in colonies. Uses collective catch tactic to gain food. Pelicans are one of the heaviest birds that have capability of flight. Their weight sometimes reaches even 11 kg.

DIET

Carps, breams, perches, pikes and tilapia.

REPRODUCTION

Nests in colonies. Female usually lays 2 eggs, which are hatched through 31 days by both of parents. Lifespan : 30 years in nature, up to 50 years in zoo.

GOOD TO KNOW

The most characteristic feature is throath sack with capacity of 13 liters. It is used as a very efficent trap for fishes. Hooked appendix placed at the end of the upper part of the beak helps with cathing prey.
