Von der Decken’s Hornbill
Birds: Africa

Von der Decken’s Hornbill

Von der Decken’s Hornbill is a representative of the hornbill family
from Eastern Africa. In nature, it can be frequently found among
dry bushes, where it looks for food such as snails, insects, arboreal frogs,
lizards, mice, seeds and fruit. The sex of these birds can be distinguished
by the color of their bill. The male has a red bill, the female
has an entirely black bill. Hornbills are monogamous. The pair works
together to close up the main entrance or their nest with a mixture of
mud, droppings, and food items such as fruit pulp until the female can
barely fit herself in and out of the nest.
