Black-footed Penguin
Birds: Africa

Black-footed Penguin

Black-footed Penguin does not inhabit the polar regions of the
Arctic but is confined to Southern African waters. Each feather has
small muscles at its base, allowing them to be held tightly against
their bodies whilst swimming. When on land, these muscles hold
the feathers erect, creating an insulating layer by trapping warm air.
The pattern of the spots on their chests is unique for each individual,
much like a human fingerprint.
